Andrew Bird. MCIWM
I have over 35 years’ experience working in the resources and waste industry. My current role is Head of Sustainable Environment for Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council.
I am an Exec member and Treasurer of the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC), and was Chair between 2014 and 2018; I previously worked as their Policy Support Officer and Vice Chair.
I am a member of DEFRA’s Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) representing Local Authorities as part of the supply chain, and playing a strategic role in the development of Extended Producer Responsibility Policy to be implemented in the next year.
I initially trained as an Industrial Designer, and after graduating fell into the world of waste management.
I am a Chartered Waste Manager, with an in-depth knowledge of waste disposal, waste and recycling collection services and material reprocessing, and street cleaning.
During my time at Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council, I have been instrumental in doubling the authorities recycling rate. Between 2011 and 2014, I was the Chair the Staffordshire Waste Officers Group, and project lead for the coordination and development of a refresh of the Joint Integrated Strategy for Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent, - Zero Waste to Landfill by 2020.
