Energy Research Accelerator
ERA is an Innovate UK funded programme tackling some of the biggest energy challenges facing the UK. We draw on the expertise and facilities of a consortium of the eight Midlands Innovation universities, (Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick), together with the British Geological Survey.
A £60m Innovate UK investment is enabling the development of state-of-the-art new facilities and unique demonstration projects across the ERA partners, which are all designed to benefit research and industry. The initial funding is also being matched by a further £120m of co-investment from the private sector.
Our research and innovation programme encompasses the areas of:
- Energy Generation
- Energy Storage
- Energy Integration
- End Use Energy Demand
Producing energy from waste is one of our key themes and we are working with companies such as CPL in Immingham to create `biocoals` from waste products in conjunction with the University of Nottingham. In the Midlands we are investing in new technologies such as a Thermo-Catalytic Reformer with the University of Birmingham, to support the innovative transformation of waste to energy at Tyseley Energy Park, a unique energy innovation zone with a focus on converting waste to energy. In addition, Aston University`s European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI) is also one of our partner institutes, a European leader in bioenergy research, and is actively supporting bioenergy innovation amongst small businesses.
