bio-bean recycles spent coffee grounds, converting them into sustainable biofuels.
bio-bean is a clean technology company founded in 2013 on the premise that there is no such thing as waste, only resources in the wrong place. We give used coffee grounds a second life by recycling them into advanced biofuels.
The UK drinks 95 million cups of coffee a day, producing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste coffee grounds every year. We work with waste management companies to collect spent coffee grounds from independent coffee shops, coffee chains, office blocks, transport hubs and instant coffee factories across the UK, from London, Birmingham, Manchester and Cambridge. Because wet used coffee grounds are heavy, disposing of them in general waste to landfill can be expensive - so recycling spent grounds can reduce waste disposal costs for businesses. It's also much better for the environment, producing 80% less emissions than landfill.
At the world's first coffee recycling factory in Cambridgeshire, we turn used coffee grounds into biomass pellets for industrial boilers, and Coffee Logs, eco briquettes for stoves and woodburners. We're also researching the potential applications of biochemicals that can be extracted from the grounds.
