Artificial Intelligence in Waste Management Drives Cost and Emissions Savings

Recycling plays a key role in keeping a society functioning and clean. Though, heavy recycling trucks are both expensive to use, and a big contributor to congestion and CO2-emissions.

With over 10 years of data gathered from 6000 sensors in recycling containers throughout Sweden and Norway, we offer unique insights into how these issues can be solved. We share the story of how our customers helped us solve this complex logistical problem.

With a background in sales, and a MSc in business and economics, Peter Nilsson was recruited by Smart Recycling to aid in the company’s marketing and business development. Sharing his northern Swedish root with the company he came to work for, innovation and sustainability has played a big part in his life. At 32 years of age, his home being a scenic hub for innovation in Sweden, it is only natural that wanting to preserve the environment through new ways of thinking has been a prevalent thought since the start. His home is what has inspired him to seek a career that would have him help local, innovative companies grow and enter the global market, sharing their green technology with the world.

Decarbonising the Waste Fleet
Wednesday 16th September 2020

The race is on to decarbonise council operations across the UK, with 67% of councils having declared a climate emergency and the government’s commitments to Net Zero by 2050. As local authorities look to tackle emissions and air pollution, attention has turned to the waste collection rounds still reliant on refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) that are powered by diesel-fuelled engines. It is a well-known fact that alternatives to the traditional diesel RCVs are going to be a considerable piece of this jigsaw.

Our first episode, Decarbonising the Waste Fleet explored the challenge of reducing emissions, from discussing the need for change, through to exploring the solutions and infrastructure required to make the change happen.
