TAYLOR BOOSTS STREET RECYCLING WITH NEW PRODUCT

PRESS RELEASE
15 September 2009

TAYLOR BOOSTS STREET RECYCLING WITH NEW PRODUCT

A purpose built solution for on-street recycling that has been designed to increase recycling ‘on the go’ has been launched by Taylor, the market leader in waste and recycling containers.

The Taylor Street converts an ordinary 1100 litre or 1280 litre bin into a stylish piece of street furniture actively to engage people in positive waste management and recycling behaviour. Designed with the principles of place-making in mind, The Taylor Street is modular so multiple units can be used and is ideal for city centres, green spaces and housing developments - particularly mid-rise or high-rise apartments. The high quality, durable unit can also be used for advertising or public information since there are large display panels on either side of the container and the door.

The unit has lid options with apertures for cans and bottles, paper and cardboard, as well as bagged recyclables and residual waste. Due to its size, the Taylor Street also reduces the risk of overflowing during peak periods and the wheeled bin inside is emptied using traditional comb refuse collection vehicles with no spillage thanks to the Taylor Street’s lid lifting on a hydraulic piston.

Dr David Gillett, Executive Director of Taylor, commented: “The Taylor Street will be particularly beneficial to developers required to satisfy the Code for Sustainable Homes by including recycling facilities. After all, it offers a system that fits easily into the community environment and looks appealing, positively impacting upon recycling habits.

“There is also great pressure to build double-presented apartments with windows in at least two directions in each dwelling. This means fewer dwellings per footprint of building, which reduces the developer’s return on investment. Installing a row of Taylor Street housings overcomes this issue by providing an external waste and recycling centre in proximity, freeing up the bin store space to be transformed into dwelling space - boosting net-to-gross ratios. “

The bin store can also be removed from the building so more space can be freed up for additional dwellings – boosting the developer’s bottom line.”

The Taylor Street adds to the company’s existing range of communal recycling facilities, which includes the node and Underground systems. It aims to meet the public’s increasing demand and need for access to convenient recycling points within their communities, as well as the needs of local authorities who require enhanced waste containment provision in public spaces.

The Taylor Street is launched following a study that suggests a link between increased usage of facilities and the design, convenience and accessibility of the containers. The research, conducted by the Caledonian Research Centre reported a 300% increase in new recyclers as a direct result of the introduction of communal ‘street style’ facilities serving high-rise apartments in the South Lanarkshire district of Scotland. It revealed that the provision of ample capacity and regular servicing of such recycling facilities was important in order not to put off would-be recyclers.
