Facilities Managers Focus

Tackling Waste to Improve the Bottom Line at RWM 2010

As commercial, legislative and environmental pressures combine, today’s facilities managers have a key role to play in driving and managing change towards a more sustainable future. Keeping apace or ahead of developments in recycling and waste management is a continual challenge, but one annual event gathers everything you need under one roof. The Recycling & Waste Management Exhibition (RWM 10) at the Birmingham NEC from 14 to 16 September 2010 features over 500 exhibiting companies, 36 free seminar sessions, and a new networking zone.

Earlier this year landfill tax went up 25% from £32 to £40 per tonne and is set to go up by a further £8 per tonne every year until 2013. So unless you recycle 100% of your waste, it will affect your bottom line. Understanding the latest regulations and keeping up to date with new technologies is vital.

RWM 10 exhibition will provide you with a host of new contacts from specialist consultants and waste management companies to recyclers of a wide range of materials and suppliers of waste and recycling bins, shredders and compacters. Also exhibiting are compliance companies, consultants and waste management contractors who can advise you of your legal obligations.

Furrther RWM 2010 updates will appear here from March 2010 onwards, fill in an e-updates form so you can find out the latest show news.

2009 - Marks & Spencer Keynote
Among the keynote speakers in 2009, Mandy Keepax, head of facilities management at Marks & Spencer, shared invaluable tips on selecting a waste partner. Her presentation covered all aspects of the process from establishing a brief and pre-qualification to how best to work together in the ideal recycling and waste partnership.

Other seminar highlights of particular interest to facilities management professionals included the Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment Directive and hazardous waste regulations, covered in the Local Authority Seminar Theatre.

The opening day’s programme at the new Energy and Water Seminar Theatre featured a keynote address from waste guru Peter Jones OBE on using waste as a fossil carbon substitute. Stuart Clayton, water team technical manager at Envirowise spoke about water conservation and re-use and Julian Walker-Palin, Asda’s head of corporate policy for sustainability and ethics outlined the business benefits of resource efficiency. The second day was devoted entirely to the topic of waste-to-energy with presentations on powering the future through food waste and a chance to get to grips with the renewable obligation order. The final day’s sessions on climate change and sustainability included a presentation from Simon Houghton-Dodd, head of quality and sustainability for Tate and Lyle Sugars Europe.

The Building Research Establishment estimates that landfill tax already costs the sector around £200 million a year, but if resources are better managed and waste properly segregated for recycling, much of this could be avoided. With an entire day of free seminars devoted to the topic of construction waste, RWM is the place to improve your firm’s environmental credentials.
Stephen Wielebski, divisional development director for Miller Homes gave a developer’s perspective on construction waste and the issues with recycling. Paul Elliot, supply chain manager for Wates presented a case study on achieving the holy grail of zero waste. A representative from the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) also spoke and the organisation was available to speak to visitors on the exhibition floor throughout the three day show.
