RWM OFFERS FREE SEMINARS TO TACKLE COUNCIL WASTE WORRIES

What is the secret to PFI success? How can Facebook and Twitter encourage your residents to recycle more? How do you conquer the planning process to minimise delay and achieve a cost effective result? Are macerators the answer to food waste, and what’s the best policy for handling radioactive waste?

With an entire seminar theatre dedicated to local authority issues, a new theatre covering waste and energy issues and over 500 exhibiting companies, the Recycling & Waste Management Exhibition (RWM 09), taking place at the Birmingham NEC from 15 to 17 September 2009, will provide public sector visitors with solutions to the most pressing issues on the recycling agenda. RWM’s Local Authority Seminar Theatre, supported by the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC), features 12 free expert-led sessions over three days covering everything from Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs) and planning to hazardous waste, Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and food waste solutions.

Key sessions include:
• Paul Jones, head of waste management at Northumberland County Council on PFI;
• Bob McIntyre, national technical advisor at the Environment Agency on hazardous waste regulation;
• Gerrard Fisher, programme manager for sustainable products at the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) on WEEE;
• Fred Barker, executive director for Nuclear Legacy Advisory Forum (NuLeAF) on managing radioactive waste;
• Andrew Craig of Tees Valley Joint Strategy Unit on food waste disposal methods and the benefits of macerators;
• Helen House, projects co-ordinator for the BREW Centre for Local Authorities on how local authorities can help local businesses to access recycling facilities;
• Michael Bennett, managing director of Pelican PR on how councils can use social media to engage with residents and customers.

Meanwhile in the new Energy & Water Seminar Theatre, delegates can hear a keynote address from waste guru Peter Jones OBE and gather expert advice on water conservation and re-use from Envirowise. A full day of sessions will be devoted entirely to the topic of waste-to-energy looking at renewable, food waste, anaerobic digestion and fiscal incentives for waste-to-energy schemes using advanced conversion technologies.

With over 500 exhibiting companies, a visit to RWM 09 also provides a convenient opportunity to find new suppliers and source the latest products and services. Gabrielle Povey, waste strategy and recycling officer, Flintshire County Council was among the 9,000 visitors who attended the show last year.
